About our maternity care
Welcome to Bennett Ward, the maternity unit at Peel Health Campus. We look forward to caring for you and your family during your stay with us. Our aim is to provide you with a safe and enjoyable experience.
The birth of your baby is one of the most important times in your life. Our staff at Peel Health Campus create a warm and relaxed environment to support mother and family to share in this joyful experience. We provide a 24-hour maternity services to the highest standards of clinical care by doctors and midwives supported by well-equipped facilities to make you feel confident you’re in good hands.
Our team of midwives, nurses, obstetricians and paediatricians work together to provide a personal experience, respecting and supporting your family to assist you during the pregnancy, birth and postnatal period and for any parenting education that you may require.
The maternity service has 24-hour access to the hospital’s operating theatre for patients requiring an emergency or planned caesarean section and on call anaesthetists.
If you are attending Peel Health Campus as a public patient and have a low-risk pregnancy you can attend our midwife-led antenatal clinic located in the North Consult Suite. Ask your GP to provide you with first trimester screening options and refer you to the Peel Health Campus Antenatal Clinic. Generally, your first appointment will be scheduled between 14-16 weeks and you will be seen every four weeks until the third trimester where your appointments will become more frequent to monitor your health and well-being and your baby’s progress.
If you have had an ultrasound or blood test prior to attending your first booking appointment, please bring the results. The midwife will book you into the hospital, discuss childbirth preparation classes and provide you with the opportunity to discuss any concerns you may have.
Public patients with low-risk pregnancies will generally be looked after by our team of midwives, supported by obstetricians. However, should your pregnancy become high risk we can help you access local obstetricians.
Bennett ward consists of seven, two-bed rooms with shared ensuite facilities, television and telephones. An a la carte menu is available for all patients and meals are freshly prepared on site. Newborn babies need to maintain maternal contact and separation may cause some babies to become unsettled therefore rooming in with your baby is encouraged to promote breastfeeding and infant bonding.
Before you have your baby with us, you may wish to tour our maternity unit and view our facilities. Please speak with our maternity receptionist to organise a day and time. Please note that our education sessions include a tour.
Partners and children of the woman may visit between 8am and 8pm with exception of during the rest period between 1pm and 3pm. During the mothers’ undisturbed rest period, no phone calls or visitors will be allowed into patient rooms.
Ward visiting is between 3pm and 6pm, with a maximum of 3 visitors at the bedside at a time.
All visiting is subject to COVID restrictions and may be restricted based on WA Health advice.
For safety and security reasons an intercom and CCTV system controls access to the Maternity and Neonatal Unit. Both areas are locked with swipe access.
The birthing suite has three fully equipped birthing rooms, each with multifunctional birthing beds and large ensuites to ensure a personal and safe environment for your birthing experience. Each room also has a television and plenty of therapeutic tools such as birth balls, heat packs and oil burners.
Support people are welcome to join you in the birthing suite during your labour. A maximum of 2 support people can be present, however as space can be limited this is at the discretion of the staff. If you are having a caesarean section, one support person may go to theatre with you.
During labour and after birth, our doctors are kept well informed about you and your baby. A midwife will always be present at the birth of your baby and a doctor will be present as necessary. Our doctors visit the maternity ward daily and are on-hand to discuss any concerns or queries you may have.
At Peel Health Campus we can deliver your baby from 36-weeks gestation. Babies born prior to this will be transferred to a more appropriate hospital. We have nursery facilities, but babies that require a higher level of care will be transferred to Perth Children’s Hospital or King Edward Memorial Hospital by the Neonatal Emergency Transport Service. This can be a time of anxiety for parents and our staff will ensure that you are informed of your baby’s condition.
