Oncology and Haematology

Comprehensive oncology treatment services, including chemotherapy

Oncology and Haematology

The Oncology and Haematology department at Peel Health Campus provides a comprehensive treatment service, including chemotherapy.

Our services include:

  • same day chemotherapy
  • outpatient medical oncology services
  • Jane McGrath Foundation nurses
  • consultation services to inpatients.

Our Chemotherapy Unit at Peel Health Campus supports patients who require chemotherapy, patient blood management and infusions for non-malignant illnesses.

The unit has the capacity to treat up to 8 patients at any one time and features beds and chairs for the comfort of our patients.

Our dedicated staff work as a team to ensure the highest quality of holistic patient care. We endeavour to treat each patient as an individual and act as the patients’ advocate, in conjunction with family and significant others.

Please note for safety reasons, children must be supervised in the treatment area.

Before your treatment

Your treatment team will advise which blood tests are required before your chemotherapy treatment.

If your blood counts are low your chemotherapy may be delayed until it is safe to give you the medication. This may include your treatment dose being reduced which may mean your chemotherapy may not be available on your planned therapy day.

Your treatment day

We encourage you to bring a family member or other carer with you to your Oncology /Haematology Clinic or Chemotherapy Unit appointments.

Please always bring a small supply of pain medication or other essential medications with you, as we may not always be able to supply these.

Various information booklets are available within the unit explaining your treatment and its possible side-effects.

Hot and cold beverages are served to patients throughout the day, accompanied by a light lunch. You are welcome to bring in your own food to suit your own dietary requirements.

Various allied health services are also available on request.

SMHS Cancer Plan 2024–34

The South Metropolitan Health Service (SMHS) Cancer Plan 2024–34 (PDF 9.2MB) sets out how we will provide exceptional care to Western Australians impacted by cancer. Outlining our commitment to prevention, diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, and palliative care over the next decade, the plan will help reduce barriers and transform how we deliver cancer care.

The plan addresses the physical, emotional, psychological, and geographic challenges faced by people with cancer, with a focus on equity, particularly for Aboriginal communities and those disadvantaged by their socioeconomic circumstances or geographic location.

Work is already underway to progress implementation of the priorities highlighted in the plan. For more information, please email the SMHS Cancer Planning Team.
